House across the road from $24.6m record-breaking Vaucluse house has $9m-$9.9m guide

No-one was more surprised than the Sotheby’s managing director, Michael Pallier, when a Vaucluse house sold at auction for $24.6m, an incredible $10.46m above the written reserve, three weeks ago.

Pallier had 25 registered bidders line up for 42 Vaucluse Road, owned by late Japanese healthcare boss, Akihiko Terada, and with its pool, tennis court and iconic views, it set a new Australian record for a house sold under the hammer.

Now Pallier’s colleague, Harriet France, has listed the landmark house across the road — ‘Wendouree’ at 41 Vaucluse Road — and although it’s a very different type of property it also has iconic views. The guide is $9m to $9.9m for a November 21 auction.

Bellevue Hill home offers best of Sydney

The five-bedroom house with two bathrooms on a 923 sqm block has been home to four generations of the same family for more than 85 years.

The block is part of the original 1838 crown grant to William Charles Wentworth, proprietor of Vaucluse House, and was bought by self-made exclusive printer Benjamin Waite, who was responsible for printing some of the most high-end publications from the 1920s until 1970s including the David Jones annual catalogue and Ure Smith’s Art in Australia magazine.

Ben added the first floor which gave the home its prized gun-barrel views across the harbour.

Ben’s son William (Bill), who was born in the now dining room in 1932, took over the family printing business. Bill and wife Janis then raised their three daughters in the house.

The house is from a bygone, stylish era when some of the grandest families called Vaucluse home, including the Arnott’s biscuit family over the road.

Bill, who died in January this year, was instrumental in helping preserve Vaucluse House through fundraising with big shindigs in the stables and the annual Christmas carols on the lawns.

The Historic Houses Trust honoured him and Janis with an honorary life membership.

The grand upstairs Art Deco tiled bathroom with views to the Opera House was once considered as a location for the 1983 film Careful He Might Hear You.
