Although Thunder was born in Busan in South Korea, he grew up in the Philippines.
He is a multi-linguist and can fluently converse in Korean, English, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Japanese languages.
While growing up, Thunder wanted to become a football player, especially a midfielder. However, he decided to focus on a music career after his family moved back to South Korea in 2007.
Thunder has been close friends with Lee Ji-eun (IU) for a long time. The two have collaborated together on music videos for the latter’s 2008 song Lost Child as well as Big Bang‘s 2007 song Lies and Super Junior‘s 2009 song Sorry, Sorry.
He received a 4-page spread in Elle Girl magazine’s February 2010 issue.
During his time with the group, he was the tallest member of MBLAQ.
Thunder and Lee Joon decided to depart from MBLAQ in 2014 after their contracts came to an end.
After exiting MBLAQ, he had a fallout with Mir and the two refrained from speaking to each other for nearly 5 years. Nevertheless, both of them came together in 2019 and finally resolved their differences during an appearance on the talk show, Video Star.
