The hotel that launched Lungarno Hotels, the group owned by fashion heir Leonardo Ferragamo. It’s the cosiest of the bunch, with boiserie panelling, plump sofas and an American-style lounge bar. It’s also the best situated, with nothing between it and that fantastic view of the River Arno and Ponte Vecchio. There's a Hemingway hint in the cigar-room décor of the ground-floor lounge and bar; a French touch in the Picasso- and Cocteau-themed photos in the communal areas and some bedrooms. The Continentale is perhaps the most playfully chic of the six Florentine properties in the Lungarno group. It occupies an enviable position overlooking the Ponte Vecchio, and is a stylish address, perfect for a romantic long weekend (complimentary perks are offered for honeymooners and couples celebrating their anniversary), with the bonus of a rooftop bar and a small, intimate spa. It raids late 1950s and early 1960s style books for its inspirations, making for a bright, light and airy space pitched somewhere between Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy. Read expert review From £ 245

This Florentine classic enjoys an excellent location and offers a delightful atmosphere along with modern services and facilities. The restaurant is a plus, as is the panoramic roof terrace, and the entry-level rooms are really very good value. No wonder it has such a faithful following of repeat guests. Located among the designer boutiques of pedestrianised Via Tornabuoni, the hotel is five to 10 minutes’ walk from the Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, the Uffizi and the Duomo. Tornabuoni Beacci dates from 1900, when a certain Signora Beacci opened her pensione in grand 15th-century Palazzo Minerbetti Strozzi. Read expert review From £ 297

The best boutique hotels in Florence

The name of this central Florence hotel pinpoints its remit: to act as a hotel and art gallery at the same time. The buzzy aperitivo and late-night scene at the bar-restaurant may put off those who don’t feel like partying, but prices are lower than in its Lungarno sister hotels – whose facilities you can use. It was the city's first design hotel, and is literally around the corner from the Ponte Vecchio. Regular Lungarno Hotels interior designer Michele Bonan has gone for a largely successful fusion of Tuscan elegance (check out the library) and contemporary Asian minimalism in the downstairs communal rooms. Even though it feels somewhat removed from the worst of the tourist crowds, the location, on the north bank of the river Arno just east of the Ponte Vecchio, is excellent. Fifth floor aside, the hotel (which inhabits a late 18th-century building) has been restyled with a nod to 1930s glamour. Streamlined ground-floor public spaces feature marble, mirrored walls, vaulted ceilings and retro furnishings.
